ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Alaska-grown rock band Portugal. The Man has just won the Grammy for best pop duo/group performance for the infectiously catchy song, “Feel It Still.”
The band beat out other nominees, “Something Just Like This,” by Coldplay and the Chainsmokers, “Despacito,” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber, “Thunder” by The Imagine Dragons, and “Stay,” by Zedd and Alessia Cara.
During the holidays, Zach Carothers, who plays bass for the band, did an interview with KTUU from his childhood home in Wasilla. “We got nominated for a Grammy for best duo/group performance which is pretty hilarious for a rock and roll, alternative band,” he said at the time. This is the first time the group was nominated for a Grammy.
During the acceptance speech, Carothers mentioned the band's Alaskan roots and how their heroes were dog mushers growing up. Carothers sent love to those living in the bush, "this is for all the kids in the village," before ending with words of encouragement to represent "where you're from."
The Alaska Airlines Center posted a video of the band's acceptance speech to social media Monday:
