ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Anchorage police say northbound lanes of the Glenn Highway, near Eklutna, are now opened again after being closed for a vehicle collision, Tuesday afternoon.

By 7:15, drivers said the Glenn Highway was clear at least to South Birchwood, after a second crash, this one involving a single vehicle into a guardrail, had again slowed things down near Eklutna around 6 p.m.

A Channel 2 Viewer said traffic was at a near-standstill all the way through Eagle River at that time.

In the first crash around 3:45 p.m., which seriously injured a driver, all northbound lanes were closed, and officers diverted traffic off the highway at the Thunderbird Falls exit.

A Channel 2 crew witnessed a medevac helicopter at the scene, between the Thunderbird Falls and Eklutna exits. And police confirm that there was a serious injury in the crash.

According to an APD officer on scene, a southbound pickup truck skidded on the road and crossed the median. It then collided with a northbound sedan.

The driver of the sedan is severely injured, and police say the fire department had to cut the individual out of the car.

By 4:20 p.m. tow trucks had already been called to the scene.
