Trail in Chugach State Park closed after bear kills moose on path

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - A Chugach State Park trail on Anchorage's upper hillside has been closed after a dead moose was discovered on the path. Officials say it was killed by a bear.

At around 2 p.m. Thursday, hikers on Blueberry Hollow trail found the dead moose with markings reflective of a bear attack. While a bear wasn't seen near the kill, a small, yearling bear was spotted in the area. Officials with Chugach State Park ordered the trail closed.

"Typically we completely close the trail for 10 days after this," said Debbie Wuerch with Chugach State Park. "We are asking residents to stay clear of the trail and surrounding area as these bears can move, and we generally expect the bear to return."

Carcasses typically are not cleared from trails, Wuerch said, and the park's official policy is to let nature take its course.
