WASILLA, Alaska (KTUU) - Alaska State Troopers say a man in Wasilla stole two cars and rammed an AST cruiser while leading troopers on two separate vehicle pursuits.
AST dispatch say they received a request for a welfare check March 7 on a vehicle with two people inside on Machen Rd. in Wasilla. James Arthur Hay, 33, allegedly fled on foot from the area and stole a vehicle, sparking a 20 mile vehicle pursuit.
“The pursuit was terminated due to deteriorating road conditions making it unsafe to continue,” said AST. Law enforcement officers “saturated the area” but Hay was allegedly able to steal a second vehicle and intentionally ram it into an AST cruiser.
Troopers say a second vehicle pursuit began for another 10 miles before deteriorating road conditions made it again unsafe to continue. Joint Task Force members and uniformed Alaska State Troopers were then able to take Hay into custody without incident.
Hay is being remanded at Mat-Su Pretrial Facility without bail for probation violations. He has been charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors including two counts of vehicle theft, third-degree assault and reckless driving.
