UPDATE: Crash causes temporary road closure on Seward Highway

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Both North and Southbound lanes of the New Seward highway near Beluga Point and McHugh Creek or miles 110-112 were temporarily closed Sunday afternoon.

Sr. Patrolman Gary Curtis with APD says the driver was heading north around 2:00 p.m. when he fell asleep at the wheel, crashing into the rock face.

Anchorage Police issued an alert around 2:15 p.n. to warn drivers to avoid the area while police investigate a crash.

According to APD spokesperson, Kendra Doshier, only minor injuries were reported and the driver was taken to the hospital. .

Drivers sitting in traffic said they had waited for as long as two hours before being able to head north.

Curtis says he didn't expect that the driver would face any charges for the collision.

By 4:30 p.m. the trailer and truck had been cleared and the road had reopened, according to callers to KTUU, the drive was slow heading north.
