Veteran musher Monica Zappa scratches at Shaktoolik checkpoint

NOME, Alaska (KTUU) - The decision to scratch has been made by one musher Thursday morning at the Shaktoolik checkpoint.

Veteran Iditarod competitor Monica Zappa of Kasilof made the decision to scratch "in the best interest of her team," a media coordinator for the Iditarod said in a statement.

Zappa decided to scratch around 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning, noting that the decision to scratch hinged on her team not wishing to continue on the sea ice trail.

Zappa had nine dogs running her sled when she made the decision to scratch.
