Woman shot in Fairbanks dies from injuries, suspect now faces murder charge

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) - The woman who was shot in Fairbanks last week has died, according to a Fairbanks Police Department spokesperson.

According to FPD, 27-year-old Jasmine Lynn States died on Feb. 4, after being shot in an incident on Jan. 30. Police arrested a suspect, Benjamin Akaran, shortly after and charged him with the shooting.

Initially, Akaran was charged with attempted murder, but with States' passing, the charges have been amended to first degree murder.

Police are asking anyone with further information regarding the shooting to contact them. Another victim, who was not named by police, was fired at, but was not hit.

The incident also shut down two neighboring schools in Fairbanks while police dealt with locating the shooter.
