ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The Alaska School Activities Association released new divisions for football early on Monday after the combining of Juneau-Douglas and Thunder Mountain High school teams shook up the Division II classification.
Division I will be made up of most of the Anchorage schools, plus other large schools from around the state: Dimond, Bartlett, East Anchorage, Chugiak, Service, Colony, South Anchorage, Juneau, West Anchorage and Wasilla.
The combined Juneau/Thunder Mountain team had formerly been in Division II. The higher division shed the Lathrop Malemutes to Div. II.
The playoff format will have the top four teams in each conference advance to the playoffs.
The quarterfinals and semifinals will be hosted by the higher seeded team.
The finals will be hosted by ASAA and ASAA will determine the home team.
Division II features the remaining Anchorage contender, Eagle River, along with Lathrop, Kenai, North Pole, Kodiak, Palmer, Soldotna and West Valley.
In that division, the top 2 teams in each conference will advance to the playofs, with Semi-finals and finals hosted by ASAA.
Division III will consist of Barrow, Homer, Eielson, Ketchikan, Houston, Nikiski, Monroe, Seward, Redington, Voznesenka and Valdez.
Ketchikan is dropping down from Division II.
The playoff format for Division III will have the top two teams in each conference advance to the playoffs.
Semifinals will be hosted by the higher seed and the finals will be hosted by ASAA.
