ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Iditarod Trail Committee announced Friday afternoon that it is developing structures for a "Best Care" kennel management program. The program would ensure all kennels entering the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race meet certain criteria, such as breeding, shelters, cleanliness, tethers, nutrition, bedding and so on. The program also requires kennel visits and a certification process.
The "Best Care" kennel program will be implemented for entries in the 2019 Iditarod.
In order to help maintain these standards, the ITC has appointed an advisory committee made up of well-known Iditarod mushers including two champions and the mayor of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The committee includes:
