Lawyer, militia officer and plantation owner Charles King Mallory of Elizabeth City County -- now the city of Hampton -- won election as a Unionist delegate to the Virginia Secession Convention. But he changed his vote on the issue even before the April 12, 1861 bombardment of Fort Sumter.
