An Anchorage Police Department officer will head to South Korea with four Alaskan Special Olympians later this month.

At a Friday news briefing, Officer Karen Och was introduced as the law enforcement official who will participate in this year's international torch run.

The run is a prelude to the Special Olympic Games that will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

“As a matter of fact, I've raised a lot of money, so I'm really excited because the team, out of ten teams, the one that raises the most, gets to bring the flame of hope into the opening ceremonies with all the police officers, and our team's in the lead,” APD Officer Karen Och said.

The torch run is the Special Olympics' biggest fundraiser and the "law enforcement torch run final leg" begins Jan. 23 with the games set for Jan. 26.

“I think it's great, all the law enforcement and stuff they're great supporters to Special Olympics and supporting the athletes and the torch run,” Ayesha Abdul-Jillil, Special Olympian, said.
