On Friday, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center mourned the loss of Jewelie, a Sitka black-tail deer, in Portage.
Jewelie the deer was a long-time animal ambassador and passed away earlier this week, according to the AWWC.
Jewelie was orphaned in 2004 and several boaters found her wandering a beach in Prince William Sound. AWWC said the boaters spotted the body of her mother in a nearby brown bear’s food cache and worked quickly to bring her from harm.
The deer gained TV popularity with Animal Planet’s “Growing up Sitka Deer,” which aired in 2006.
AWWC currently has 2 yearling Sitka black-tailed deer named Solo and Leia.
