A black bear cub reportedly entered Bartlett High School Wednesday afternoon, according to Anchorage police. Officers have cleared the building and found no sign of the bear.
APD spokesperson Marlene Lammers says the uninvited ursine, in a first-floor hallway on the southeast side of the building near the theater, was reported to police by construction workers installing smart boards inside the building. A door to the building had been left open, which is possibly where the bear went inside.
A second bear cub was seen on the school’s track, leading police to assume a sow was also in the area.
Police responded to the scene at about 1 p.m., and cleared the building of workers floor-by-floor. Heavily armed officers were posted at the doors, and a response from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game was expected shortly.
While Anchorage’s school year ended May 17, some ASD facilities have been opened for various maintenance purposes over the summer.
