Each month Channel Two News awards a scholarship to a deserving student. August’s Fund the Future scholarship winner is a freshman at U.A.A. with dreams of being a doctor one day.
Jayme Perkins and her grandma can't quite remember who's idea it was to volunteer at Providence Hospital, but they recall wanting to do it together.
The duo tried helping in several different areas, but soon agreed they liked the Adult Critical Care Unit best.
It's there Jayme learned how to handle difficult situations, when to listen and when to talk, and how to empathize.
“ Just realizing that people aren't in the best situations they are really emotional,” said Perkins. “You have to learn how to deal with that. You kind of have to put a front on.”
When Jamie started at the hospital she was the youngest volunteer. Her grandma says she was shy, sometimes even afraid to say hi to people.
“To work with her was fun, because I got to see here grow,” her grandmother Janice McInnis said. “We laughed a lot, we cried a lot, of course.”
After high school graduation Jayme continued to volunteer despite the fact she won't get school credit anymore
The 18 year old isn't quite sure what she wants to do when she grows-up, but her time in the Critical Care Unit has helped her realize she would like to go into the medical field.
