An Anchorage man who has lined a fence along 3rd Avenue Downtown with hundreds of liquor bottles calls the project art, and says he’ll put every liquor bottle he finds into the fence.
Ron Alleva, who lives in the area, started placing bottles near the Anchorage Jail and says he expects them to eventually reach the Lucky Wishbone. He says the project has a message: bringing attention to the social service programs in the area, which he feels don’t have enough solutions to problem drinking.
“It’s not a message in a bottle, it’s a message with a bottle.” Alleva said.
Jim Crockett, who runs Bean’s Café, says Alleva should have more compassion. He said volunteers at the Café already clean up the area twice a day, and the Brother Francis Shelter next door does so as well.
“I think everybody deserves food to eat and something over their heads because it gives them hope, and I think a series of hopes give them dreams -- and I think everybody might be down once in their lives,” Crockett said.
