FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Early returns show Luke Hopkins leading Tammie Wilson in their runoff for Fairbanks North Star Borough mayor.
But the two assembly members likely will have to wait until next week for the final voter tally to find out who won the Tuesday runoff election.
Hopkins had about 52 percent of the vote in the early returns, or more than a 600-vote lead. But nearly 2,800 early, absentee and questioned ballots have to be counted.
Wilson surprised many by emerging from a slate of conservative candidates in the Oct. 6 mayoral election to earn a spot on Tuesday's runoff ballot.
Officials noted turnout was high for a runoff election, which typically have relatively low turnouts.
