Coast Guard suspends search for missing crew man

Associated Press - November 10, 2009 2:54 AM ET

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The Coast Guard says it has suspended its search for a Filipino crewman missing from a cargo ship north of Dutch Harbor.

The Coast Guard says 21-year-old John Ree Payla went missing Sunday from the Panamanian-flagged cargo vessel Corona Infinity, which was headed to Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

The Coast Guard diverted an HC-130 Hercules aircraft and two helicopters out of Kodiak to help in a search that covered nearly 1,500 square miles.

An urgent marine information broadcast also was issued encouraging vessels in the area to keep a look out for the man.
