Some have been waiting for this day to come for 30 years – on Friday, a ribbon cutting ceremony marked the opening of a designated ski area at Hatcher Pass.
Both recreational and high school competitive skiers can now enjoy 3.5 miles of Nordic ski trails inside the "Government Peak Recreation Area” at Hatcher Pass.

Mat-Su Borough officials say they hope Anchorage residents take advantage of the new trails, which were designed by Bill Spencer, an Olympian.
Officials also said with the opening it hopes to bring international ski events, such as the World Cup, to Alaska.
The trails can also be used for snow shoeing, but motorized vehicles are not allowed.
“It's a really nice area, it's higher up from the floor, it's a little bit warmer,” Bill Spencer, former Nordic skier said. “There's not as much wind up here, the snow is good, the views are spectacular, the terrain is awesome, what else are you looking for?”
