State fisheries biologists have come up with their forecast for Chitina dipnetting this summer.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is forecasting plenty of reds but not that many kings.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that commercial fisheries biologists in Cordova are projecting a sockeye salmon run of 2.24 million in the Copper River this coming summer. That would be the 11th-largest red salmon run since 1980.

The forecast for kings is just 46,300. That would be the fifth-smallest since 1980. An average king run is about 70,000 fish.

This year's preseason projections are almost identical to last year for both reds and kings. And while the weak king forecast last year turned out to be true, the red salmon run far exceeded the preseason projection.
