Denali National Park visitors will see a change in fees to enter the park effective Jan. 1, as the park eliminates a $20 per vehicle fee and instead charges an entrance fee of $10 per person over 16.Park spokesperson Kris Fister says the park is removing the vehicle fee because it’s not collected at an entrance station, as it is at most national parks.
While the entrance fees for people who visit the park by bus are frequently collected by tour operators and other entities, Fister says the fees -- which are valid for seven days -- are optional. Some people pay the fee and leave additional donations, while others pay nothing.
“We’re not going to be shaking them down for it,” Fister said.
Visitors to the park in winter can pay the fees at the Murie Science and Learning Center, or during the summer at the Denali Visitors Center. Holders of interagency federal park passes, such as the Annual, Senior and Access Passes or the Denali Access Pass, and up to three accompanying adults are exempt from the fee.
The Denali Access Pass costs $40 and is good for one year, and is only sold at facilities on park grounds. The other passes have varying durations and costs, and can be purchased at the park or the U.S. Geological Survey’s online pass store.
