Photos: Diamond Gulch Hike in Homer
A hike at Diamond Gulch in Homer is a choose-your-own-length hike. With an approximately 1.5-mile hike down from the Sterling Highway (at Mile 167, about 6 miles north of downtown Homer), hikers can hike the beach of Kachemak Bay as far as they want, and back, or go all the way to Bishop's beach, about 8 miles away. Diamond Ridge Road (on the south side of the highway) is gated, and hikers will have to park outside the gate and keep clear of the private road.
On this hike, we found sun, sand, and even spotted a sea otter and seal.

Downhill
On the day of our hike, the gate on the private road at the Sterling Highway was open, which saved us about a mile and a half of hiking. Locals say they have rarely seen the gate open, so about a mile and a half of hiking will likely get you from the Sterling Highway to the beach. The hike is definitely a switchback down a bluff, but not too strenuous.
