Federal officials have ordered a temporary closure of all public entry on the north side of the Kenai River near the Kenai-Russian River Ferry because of heightened bear activity.

Deputy Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Manager Stephen Miller says access to fishing remains open, and fishing along the banks of the Kenai River is still allowed.

The area closed covers 29 acres near the ferry in one of the state's most popular sport fisheries.

Officials say sows with cubs have been spotted in the wooded area. Law enforcement could apprehend and cite people who enter the closed area.

The closure is in effect until July 21, and could be extended or rescinded earlier.
