In January, oatmeal is getting its proper dues with national oatmeal month celebrated across America.

The census bureau said it’s a month set aside to recognize the long-term breakfast favorite for its health characteristics: low fat, no sodium, and the ability to help lower the risk of heart disease.

Each year, Americans eat an average of more than four and a half pounds of oats, according to the census.

The U.S. is the world's third largest oat producer after Russia and Canada.
