( Cloe Poisson, Hartford Courant / April 6, 2011 ) Robert Hybsch, Vice President of Customer Operations at Connecticut Light & Power, examines The Backpack Umbrella, modeled by its inventor, Johniah Gomez, 11, a sixth-grader at Thomas Edison Magnet School in Meriden. Gomez was among about 170 students who are participating in the annual Connecticut Invention Convention. They visited the State Capitol and the Legislative Office Building Wednesday for a press conference with Gov. Dannel Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman and to display their inventions and practice presenting them. Some of these students will be among the 700 finalists competing in the competition May 17 at the University of Connecticut. Gomez said her invention came out of a need to keep her backpack and books dry on rainy days. |
