Alaska Serial Killer: Israel Keyes Interviews Released
Before he was charged in the slaying of a young barista, Israel Keyes bluntly told authorities in Alaska he would talk about other victims, but only on his terms. Among his demands: He wanted an execution date, not to languish in a maximum security prison. Keyes says in recorded interviews with authorities last year there wasn't a jury in the nation that would "not vote for the death penalty." Keyes committed suicide in his jail cell in December as he awaited trial in the death of Samantha Koenig, who was abducted February 2012 from the Anchorage coffee stand where she worked. Keyes confessed to killing at least seven others, including Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vt. Audio recordings were released after the Alaska Dispatch filed a motion in federal court to unseal them and the interviews were conducted from April 2012 to July 2012. more.../span>
FBI Releases Last Known Writings of Israel Keyes
The FBI released a long-awaited note Wednesday which was found in admitted serial killer Israel Keyes’ Anchorage jail cell after his Dec. 2 suicide, although it apparently didn’t contain any immediate clues to further crimes he may have committed. There is no indication as to when the notes were written, but Gonzales says the writings are believed to be Keyes’ last. more.../span>
Alaska Officials Mum on Israel Keyes' Suicide
Alaska prisons officials refuse to say how confessed serial killer Israel Keyes obtained a razor before his jail-cell suicide. The state Department of Corrections denied a public records request from The Associated Press that seeks to determine whether the 34-year-old Keyes was allowed to have a razor, which he used to slit a wrist. The state cites prisoner confidentiality and "anticipation of litigation." Keyes, who also strangled himself, was found dead Dec. 2. Keyes was awaiting a March trial in federal court in the 2012 slaying of 18-year-old Anchorage barista. He was in state custody in Anchorage because there are no federal prisons in Alaska. more.../span>

Israel Keyes' Suicide Prompts Action to Dismiss Charges
A serial killer's recent suicide has prompted federal prosecutors to seek dismissal of charges in the slaying of an Alaska barista. Prosecutors in Anchorage said in a motion filed this week that the indictment against Israel Keyes "is abated by his death" by law. A federal magistrate recommends granting the motion and has forwarded it to the judge assigned to the case against Keyes, who confessed to the February murder of 18-year-old barista Samantha Koenig in Anchorage, as well as others across the country. Keyes confessed to the 2011 murders of Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vt., and as many as five unnamed victims, four in Washington state and one on the East Coast, the body dumped in New York. Investigators believe there could be more victims as well. more.../span>

The Keyes family pastor, Jake Gardner, told reporters that Israel Keyes is now in a place of eternal torment. Keyes slit his wrist and strangled himself with bedding and was found dead last Sunday. He was facing federal murder charges in the kidnapping and death of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, who was abducted from an Anchorage coffee stand on Feb. 1. more.../span>
Serial Killer Israel Keyes' Funeral to Take Place in Washington
There will be a funeral Sunday in Washington state for accused serial killer Israel Keyes exactly one week after he killed himself in his Anchorage Jail cell. His family and their pastor will travel from Texas to Deer Park, Washington for a small service. Pastor Jacob Gardner spoke with KTUU Channel 2 news Saturday morning. He says he had never met Keyes personally but is very close to Keyes' family in Texas who are members of the "Church of Wells" in east Texas. Gardner says the family and church members prayed for Keyes and tried to get him to repent for his crimes. “He's been a heavy burden on our hearts that we have been bearing before the lord in prayer over these last sixteen to nineteen months,” Pastor Gardner said. “We have been praying for this man, so I am in no way ignorant of our dealings with him but very much intimately acquainted with his family and with those that have dealt with him in our church.” He admitted to killing at least eight people across the country, including Samantha Koenig and Bill and Lorraine Currier of Vermont. FBI investigators believe he could have as many as twelve victims. more.../span>

FBI: Alaska Serial Killer Likely Had More Victims
An Alaska serial killer admitted to murdering eight people, but authorities suspect there are more victims across the country. FBI Special Agent Jolene Goeden on Friday put the number of victims at fewer than 12, but acknowledges she doesn't know for sure because Israel Keyes took that information with him when he committed suicide Sunday at an Anchorage jail. Goeden and Anchorage Police Officer Jeff Bell tell The Associated Press they deduced the number of victims from hours of conversations they had with Keyes. Three of the eight people Keyes confessed to killing have been identified, but he provided few details about the other five. The FBI has released a timeline of Keyes' travels over the past decade and is seeking the public's help in finding other potential victims. more.../span>

APD, FBI Poured Massive Resources Into Koenig Case and Keyes Investigation
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has received a number of leads about other potential victims of serial killer Israel Keyes, said Special Agent in Charge Mary Rook on Thursday. The leads are coming in across the country, to cities including Seattle, Portland, Chicago and New York, after the FBI requested the public's help in tracking down information about Keyes' travels and possible victims. On Thursday, FBI officials released new details about the weapons Keyes had stashed in New York. A bucket was found in mid-April 2012 containing a silencer, a .22 caliber pistol, ammunition and a flashlight. FBI officials will prioritize and look into each tip they receive. It is part of the ongoing work load that law enforcement in Alaska and across the country are pouring into the investigation. Rook said the investigation will continue through 2013 and will involve every FBI officer in the country. The FBI was part of the Samantha Koenig investigation since day two of the teenager's disappearance. Along with Anchorage police, authorities worked quickly, hoping to bring Koenig home safely. APD Detective Monique Doll says the department spent about 10,000-15,000 hours working the Koenig case. The entire detective division, which includes 60-85 people, were on the investigation, sometimes working 20-hour days, seven days a week. The department racked up more than $400,000 in overtime. Doll says it is money well-spent since their efforts led to Keyes' arrest and resulting murder confessions. "I truly believe that without any one individual's effort, we would not have gotten a confession from Israel Keyes," said Doll. Both APD and the FBI says they were dealing with the largest case they had in years. Once Keyes sent a ransom note, the FBI's involvement grew. "We brought in even more resources at that point because then we had more evidence, we had ATM card usage at that point so that's when the investigation really ramped up," said Rook. More agents and analysts were added to the case. A forensic dive team was brought to Alaska to recover Koenig's body from Matanuska Lake. It was a massive amount of resources used that helped put a killer behind bars. "I'm very pleased we were able to take Israel Keyes off the streets. Because I'm confident he would have continued to kill," said Rook. "He was very sophisticated and methodical and the fact we were able to catch him and tie him to these other crimes is really a testament to our people up here." more.../span>

Israel Keyes Robbed Northern New York Bank, FBI Says
Authorities say a man who committed suicide in an Alaska jail after confessing to a string of killings also robbed a bank in New York's Adirondacks, where he owned land and investigators have found one of his murder weapons. An FBI spokesman in Albany says 34-year-old Israel Keyes told authorities the Community Bank branch in Tupper Lake was one of several he held up to pay for his travel. State Police Capt. Robert LaFountain says Tuesday the robber threatened people with a handgun. Nobody was hurt during the April 2009 holdup. Keyes was being held for killing an 18-year-old Anchorage barista when he told authorities about the other crimes, including killing a Vermont couple in 2011. The FBI says a gun used in that crime was found in a reservoir about 30 miles from his property in Constable. more.../span>
FBI Says Israel Keyes Planned Murders, Stashed Supplies
The FBI says Israel Keyes, who has already admitted to three killings, said he had killed at least five additional people as the FBI seeks more information from the public on his activities following his Sunday death in an Anchorage Jail cell. According to an FBI statement released Monday, Keyes, who confessed to killing barista Samantha Koenig and Essex, Vt. couple Bill and Lorraine Currier, is believed to have committed numerous kidnappings and murders across the nation over the course of 11 years, from 2001 until his March arrest in Lufkin, Texas. Keyes told officials he had killed four people in Washington state: a couple he had murdered between 2001 and 2005, as well as two other people in separate incidents during 2005 and 2006. Keyes also said he murdered a fifth person on the East Coast, disposing of the body in New York. “It is unknown if these victims were residents of Washington or if they were vacationing in Washington but resided in another state,” officials wrote. “It is also possible Keyes abducted them from a nearby state and transported them to Washington.” Keyes had lived in Alaska since 2007, but often traveled in his line of work as a general contractor. “In a series of interviews with law enforcement, Keyes described significant planning and preparation for his murders, reflecting a meticulous and organized approach to his crimes,” FBI officials wrote. “It was not unusual for Keyes to fly into an airport, rent a car, and drive hundreds of miles to his final destination.” According to the bureau, Keyes said he visited isolated locations such as “parks, campgrounds, trailheads, cemeteries, (and) boating areas” to look for victims. He said authorities had recovered one of his victims, in a case whose specifics have not been identified by investigators, but had ruled the death accidental. The FBI says the Curriers, who were reported missing in June 2011, were victims of such premeditation, with Keyes flying into Chicago and driving a rental car to their farmhouse. After killing Bill Currier, then sexually assaulting and killing Lorraine Currier, authorities say Keyes continued to tour the East Coast before driving back to Chicago and flying back to Alaska. Keyes told investigators he had hidden caches of supplies, including “weapons and other items used to dispose of bodies,” across the U.S. Two such caches -- one in Eagle River, and one near the Blake Falls Reservoir in New York -- have been found by law enforcement officials. more.../span>

Israel Keyes Confessed to Killing Vermont Couple
Israel Keyes, 34, the man accused of killing Samantha Koenig, 18, an Anchorage barista, committed suicide Sunday morning and confessed to killing a Vermont couple, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska. Keyes confessed to killing Koenig to Alaska law enforcement and also admitted to kidnapping and killing Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex Junction, Vermont. Investigators in Vermont said they gathered enough details to confirm that Keyes killed the Curriers, however they were unable to find their remains after searching areas in Essex and Coventry, Vermont. The link between Keyes and the Curriers’ murders were not publicly disclosed due to a request by Alaska authorities to gather more information on other murders, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont. Law enforcement in Vermont agreed with the request since Keyes was awaiting trial in Alaska and said its investigation had not revealed any other murder by Keyes in Vermont. Alaska and Vermont authorities were working together since April 2012 to solve the Curriers killings. At a Sunday press conference in Anchorage, officials said they believed there were other victims in other states with up to eight victims. The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont said it will hold a press conference at 1:30 p.m. (Eastern time) on Monday, December 3. Contact Neil Torquiano more.../span>

Koenig Case: Defense Says Keyes Subject of Other Investigations
Israel Keyes is currently in federal custody awaiting trial on charges that he kidnapped and killed 18-year-old Samantha Koenig earlier this year. In court documents filed Wednesday, Keyes' attorneys said they have been unable to consult with Keyes adequately for the current timeline of the case, and said that the government's "repeated contact with Mr. Keyes over the objection of undersigned counsel" is interfering with moving forward. On Monday, the Defense filed a motion to extend a deadline for them to suppress statements made by Keyes. Both the defense and government agreed that October 31st was a suitable date, but the court set October 16th as the due date. Keyes' lawyers said that because "Mr. Keyes is being investigated on other matters," they must be fully informed about other criminal investigations and allegations in order to know which statements may need to be suppressed, and to adequately advise their client. WCAX, a Vermont TV station, said a source tells the station that Keyes is the prime suspect in the murders of Bill and Lorraine Currier, who disappeared from their Vermont home in June of 2011. Their remains have not been found and Keyes has not been charged in the case. Contact Kortnie Horazdovsky more.../span>
