U.S. Army Vessel Grounds Near Kodiak to Avoid Sinking

( Courtesy Alaska DEC / June 9, 2012 ) The U.S. Army Reserve vessel Monterrey grounded on Puffin Island to avoid sinking after striking Humpback Rock in Chiniak Bay, according to the U.S. Coast Guard and radio station KMXT. The Monterrey may be carrying up to 40,000 gallons of diesel fuel; Coast Guard officials say two fuel tanks have been breached and say15,291 gallons have leaked into the water. |
