KENAI, Alaska—
Federal officials now have a better handle on the number of brown bears on the Kenai Peninsula.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Forest Service combined for the first estimate.
The study conducted in June 2010 came up with an estimate of 624 brown bears.
Officials say in a release that prior to this, wildlife and land managers didn't know how many there were, and the number will help guide future management of brown bears.
