( GKIDS / December 4, 2012 ) Adapted from a series of graphic novels by Joann Sfar and co-directed by Sfar and Antoine Delesvaux, this Algiers-set French comedy follows a rabbi whose cat swallows the family parrot — and starts to talk. Told in the style of old-fashioned, hand-drawn animation, the quirky story deals in philosophical themes — the feline reads Stendhal and asks for a bar mitzvah so he can marry the rabbi's daughter. "The setup is humorous and ingenious," Beckman said. "And it's so beautifully lined, with intricate cross-hatching." Release date: Jan. 18. |
