Troopers DUI Do the Math Ad

There were two fatal crashes during Thanksgiving patrols, according to Alaska State Troopers.

On Tuesday afternoon, troopers released numbers from its enforcement campaign and the number of citations issued this year was slightly down from 2011.  Troopers issued 516 citations during this month's holiday patrols compared to 628 citations last year.

On Nov. 24, Robert Hammel, 60, of Girdwood, was struck and killed after  John Sadusky, 86, lost control of a Dodge Caravan heading southbound near mile 88 of the Seward Highway.

On Nov. 16, Daniel Gonzales, 85 of Soldotna, was killed in a two-vehicle crash after after Ruby Gonzales, 82, of Soldotna, lost control on a hill on the Sterling Highway after that also injured three other people near Mile 107 of the Sterling Highway.

Troopers made 27 misdemeanor DUI arrests and three felony DUI arrests and 24 drivers were charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license.

Some 133 drivers were contacted under the Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately program, but were ultimately determined not to be intoxicated.

A total of 71 crashes involving damage and 14 with injuries were reported.

Troopers also gave 227 speeding tickets and 12 tickets for violation of seat-belt or other occupant-restraint laws.

Alaska State Troopers spokesperson said that the law enforcement across the state helped to curb driving under the influence (DUI) offenders from hitting the streets.
