De-icer expected to arrive today at Aberdeen Regional Airport

One flight did arrive in Aberdeen on Tuesday, but a de-icer didn’t, so Aberdeen's airline problems continue until today.

Paperwork problems prevented a de-icing truck from arriving at Aberdeen Regional Airport on Tuesday. That truck, which is traveling from Omaha, Neb., is meant to substitute for the airport's normal de-icing truck, which went on the blink Saturday.

The substitute de-icing truck left Omaha on Tuesday, but the trip was not completed because approval is needed from officials in three states, said Delta spokesman Michael Thomas.

The de-icing truck is aboard a flatbed truck from Omaha. Because it's a large vehicle, permission must be obtained from the department of transportation in each state the vehicle is traveling through — Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. The boom on the de-icing truck makes the vehicle taller than normal, although it shouldn’t have any problem getting under any interstate bridges. Driving at night is also a problem.

Thomas said the truck will certainly arrive in Aberdeen no later than today.

A flight did arrive from Minneapolis shortly after its 2:38 p.m. scheduled arrival time Tuesday, Thomas said.

“Due to some of the icing conditions on the descent portion, it did pick up some ice,” he said.

Because of the lack of a de-ice truck, the return trip was canceled.

It's possible that the plane will depart Aberdeen this morning at 6:45, but that is far from a sure thing.

“We will make a determination about the safety and viability of operating that flight as things progress,” Thomas said.

The de-icing truck also might not arrive before 6:45 a.m. today, he said.

The flights slated to arrive in Aberdeen at 10:54 p.m. were canceled Monday and Tuesday nights.

The de-icing truck is owned by Delta Global Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines. SkyWest Airlines, based in St. George, Utah, is the Delta Connection Carrier serving Aberdeen.
