Anchorage firefighters say there were no injuries reported in a Jewel Lake duplex fire Thursday morning, although the structure suffered extensive smoke damage.

AFD dispatchers say 11 units were dispatched to the fire, on the 3600 block of West 79th Avenue, shortly after 10:30 a.m.

Firefighters at the scene say Lumen Christi High School principal Tom Sorci, the occupant of one unit in the duplex, was at work when the fire took place. The occupant of the other half of the duplex reportedly had a pet, but had taken the animal away from home for the day.

A neighbor who had recently taught her grandchildren how to use 911 reportedly called the fire in to dispatchers.

Firefighters were removing parts of the duplex's ceiling and the insulation above it Thursday.
