Alaska Representative Les Gara of Anchorage spent Tuesday recovering in a New York City hospital after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer.

Gara said preliminary indications show that the procedure was a success and he remains in a lot of pain, but his sense of humor remains intact.

He texted KTUU with an update on his progress and pointed out that Governor Sean Parnell had signed the "fishing stream access” bill that Gara had sponsored.

Gara joked the Governor did it out of "sympathy."

Gara hopes to return to the special legislative session in Juneau next week.
