The Anchorage Assembly plans to introduce an ordinance at its July 10 meeting that would expand the area around city buildings where you can't smoke.
Currently, smoking is not allowed near 20 feet of any entrance to a city-owned or operated building, like City Hall and the Loussac library. If the proposed law passes, that distance would expand to 50 feet.
Midtown assemblyman Dick Traini came up with the idea. He says the extra distance from doors provides extra assurance that secondhand cigarette smoke won't be able to get inside city buildings, either through entrances or air intake units.
Traini says he hasn't heard any complaints about his proposal so far. He says his proposal would not affect private businesses where smoking bans are in place, like bars and restaurants.
The ordinance is scheduled for a public hearing on July 24.
