Anchorage city leaders are continuing to take a close look at Mayor Dan Sullivan's spending plan for next year.
The parks and recreation department is just one of the many Anchorage departments asked to come up with ways to save money as the city faces a $30 million shortfall for next year.
Under Sullivan's proposal, the parks department would lose some gardening positions and also cut back on park maintenance to save money. Three community work officers would not be funded.
But assembly chair Ernie Hall says with a new zoning-type approach taken up by director John Rodda, the public likely won't be able to see any difference next year, even as the department is forced to do more with less.
After the assembly passes the final spending plan next month, Mayor Sullivan can veto any part of it, unless a supermajority of eight of 11 assembly members overrules him.
