State officials say a Republican challenger trailing in a close race for an Anchorage state Senate seat has filed for a recount.
In results certified by the state Division of Elections, Bob Bell was behind incumbent Democratic Sen. Hollis French by 51 votes in the Senate District J race.
Gail Fenumiai, the division's director, says Bell’s filing “substantially complies with statutory requirements.”
Bell had told The Associated Press that he owed it to his supporters to verify the count, with French saying he’d probably request a recount too if he were in Bell’s position.
The recount will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. at Fenumiai’s office in Juneau. The state will pay the costs involved.
Wednesday is the deadline to file requests for recounts in state races.
