The Alaska Legislature has passed a measure requiring that prosecutors and judges consider a victim's interest in timely disposition of a case in weighing continuances.
SB135 also would ensure that victims are notified of any requests or motions that could significantly delay prosecution.
The bill was sponsored by Sen. Hollis French, who has said the bill fulfills the promises made by a 1994 state constitutional amendment, that victims get the same consideration in their rights to a speedy trial as defendants.
The bill now goes to the governor.
