Gov. Sean Parnell says more than 30 Alaska communities have signed up so far to participate in rallies or marches against domestic violence and sexual assault.

Parnell, in a Facebook post this week, says that puts the state well on its way to meeting a goal of having 40 communities hold "Choose Respect" events March 31.

Cracking down on the scourge of domestic violence and sexual assault is a centerpiece of Parnell's legislative agenda. Parnell helped lead a "Choose Respect" march in Juneau last year. He believes that talking about the problem -- bringing light to it -- is important to reversing rates of violence now considered by many to be epidemic.

Parnell also has appeared in public service announcements.
