ANCHORAGE, Alaska—
The Alaska Board of Game will not expand the use of snares to kill grizzly and black bears, for now.On Tuesday, the board delayed a decision on snares as a means of predator control to protect moose calves.
Snaring of black bears is now limited to an area across Cook Inlet from Anchorage. It has been allowed for grizzly bears in a smaller portion of the same area.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game proposed expansion to Unit 19A, including Aniak, Upper Kalskag and Lower Kalskag on the west and Lime Village and Stony River to the east.
The board could reconsider expansion at its March meeting in Fairbanks.
Former Gov. Tony Knowles and others last week condemned bear snaring as a management tool.
