A Friday AST dispatch says two Fairbanks troopers responded to reports of the disturbance, at an address on Madcap Lane, just before 9 p.m. They identified the source of the disturbance as Stanley Pieniazek, 75, who didn’t respond to troopers when they called out to him.
“When one of the troopers tried to contact Pieniazek inside of his camper, Pieniazek produced a handgun and pointed it at the trooper, who then withdrew from the camper,” troopers wrote. “Pieniazek then shot repeatedly at the two troopers outside of his camper.”
The troopers returned fire with their duty weapons, but nobody was struck or injured during the exchange of fire.
Pieniazek was arrested on two counts of third-degree assault after troopers consulted with the Fairbanks district attorney’s office. He is being held without bail at the Fairbanks Correctional Center.
The names of the troopers involved in the shooting incident will be withheld for at least three days, per Alaska Department of Public Safety policy.
