Alaska Wildlife Troopers are seeking a 50-year-old man, currently facing charges in seven criminal cases and previously the subject of a 1999 manhunt, after he removed an ankle monitor and fled from a court-approved custodian Thursday.
An Alaska State Troopers dispatch Tuesday says Michael Anthony Roberts, also known as Tony Roberts, is wanted on a $50,000 arrest warrant for contempt of court. He has been charged with offenses including guiding without a license, flying without a pilot’s license and driving with a revoked driver’s license.
Troopers say Roberts was released from custody in February, after his conviction in Cordova court on charges of illegally taking a moose on the same day he was airborne.
“During the early morning hours on Oct. 4, an alert was received that Roberts' court ordered ankle monitoring device had been tampered with,” troopers wrote. “Responding officers located the device that was apparently cut-off with a grinder and left in the backyard of Roberts' third-party custodian's residence in Anchorage.”
Troopers spent weeks looking for Roberts in 1999, when he eluded a team sent to arrest him after he was witnessed committing a variety of serious wildlife offenses by undercover officers posing as hunting clients.
According to AST, Roberts’ criminal record includes DUI, driving without a license, assault and forgery, in addition to numerous wildlife and guiding offenses.
Roberts stands 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighs 220 pounds; he has balding gray hair and green eyes. Troopers say he has spent time in Anchorage and frequents the Big Lake, Wasilla, Cordova and Yakutat areas, as well as the Yentna and Susitna River drainages.
