A small Fairbanks company is among the finalists competing to develop a new series of camouflage patterns for theU.S. Army.

Kryptek Inc. is among four companies and an Army team in the running.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://bit.ly/yHlefe) says Kryptek has four employees. The three other companies are billion-dollar corporations.

Headquarters for the Fairbanks company is a back room of CEO Butch Whiting's log home near Steele Creek Road.

The patterns by the finalists will begin a four-month series of field trials in May to determine which one performs best.

The separate winning designs for woodland, arid and transitional terrain will be used on a range of items, from everyday uniforms to tactical equipment.

Whiting says he likes his company's odds.
