JBER soldier Staff Sgt. Eric Hammar, died July 14 from his injuries from enemy forces in Afghanistan, according to military officials. (Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson / July 17, 2012)

On Tuesday morning, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson said an Alaska-based paratrooper from Arizona was killed July 14 from enemy forces in Afghanistan.

JBER said 24-year-old Staff Sgt. Carl Eric Hammar died Saturday from injuries when his patrol was attacked by a rocket propelled grenade and small arms fire.

The attack happened in the Khost Province and Hammar was medevaced to FOB Sharana.

Hammar was from Lake Havasu City, Arizona and his next of kin have been notified.

He joined the Army in 2005 and served two previous tours of duty in Iraq and was assigned to 1st Battalion (Airborne), 501st Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at JBER.
