FAIRBANKS, Alaska—
The senior military officer in Alaska says after Eielson Air Force Base's squadron of F-16s moves to Anchorage the base will continue to serve a purpose. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says Air Force Lt. Gen. Stephen Hoog's comments to the Legislature's Joint Armed Services Committee came as a relief to those who believe the loss of the fighter planes is setting the Fairbanks area base up for closure.
Hoog says Eielson will keep the National Guard's refueling unit and will continue to play a critical role in Alaska's Red Flag training exercises, three of which are scheduled for this year.
