Anchorage police have arrested two local men after separate sexual-assault incidents Thursday, including an alleged assault outside a Downtown homeless shelter.

APD spokesperson Marlene Lammers says volunteers at the Brother Francis Shelter, at 1021 E. 3rd Ave., alerted officers who were already at the shelter on an unrelated call Thursday night to a sexual assault in progress. The volunteers approached a man who had put his hands down the pants of an unconscious, intoxicated woman, causing him to stop what he was doing.

“Officers made contact with both the victim and suspect and determined the suspect had assaulted the 32 year old female,” Lammers wrote. “During the assault the suspect also stole the victim’s cell phone from her person.”

Elijah Walker, 35, was charged with second-degree and third-degree sexual assault, as well as third-degree theft. He is being held at the Anchorage Jail on $25,000 bond.

In a separate incident earlier Thursday, police responded to an apartment complex on the 1000 block of West 26th Avenue, from which a woman called saying she had heard and investigated strange noises coming from her neighbor’s apartment shortly after 4 p.m.

“When she entered, she observed an unknown male in the bed with the 53 year old female victim and he appeared to be smothering the victim with a pillow as he was on top of her and having sex,” Lammers wrote. “After being confronted by the neighbor, the suspect got off of the victim, pulled up his pants and left the apartment.”

The victim said she had seen the man in the apartment complex, and believed he was staying with another resident. Officers and detectives conducted an investigation and obtained an arrest warrant for 59-year-old Charles Charlie, who was arrested when he returned to the apartment complex Thursday night.

Charlie faces first-degree charges of burglary and attempted sexual assault. He was remanded to the Anchorage Jail with bail set at $50,000. APD is asking anybody who may have been contacted by Charlie to contact Detective John Vandervalk at 786-8776.
