The cause of death for a pedestrian who died following a Tuesday low-speed crash in Midtown was released by Anchorage police Thursday, as investigators continue to seek information on the incident.
APD spokesperson Anita Shell says the state medical examiner has determined that Hymie James Castro, 64, was killed by blunt-force trauma to the head. Toxicology reports are pending, and expected to be available in six to eight weeks.
Castro was struck by a Subaru Forester near the Wells Fargo bank at 600 E. Northern Lights Blvd. at about noon Tuesday when the SUV’s driver, 68-year-old Virginia Jacober of Anchorage, was leaving the bank’s parking lot and making a right turn onto C Street heading south. The crash didn't appear severe at the time, but Castro was later taken to a hospital and died at about 6 p.m. Tuesday.
“When officers and medics arrived, Castro was sitting up and coherent, but it was unclear what direction of travel he was in when he collided with the vehicle,” Shell wrote in a Thursday statement. “Witnesses left the scene prior to speaking with police.”
No citations have been issued in the crash. Anyone who saw the incident or has information on where Castro had traveled Tuesday is asked to call APD at 786-8900.
Editor's note: This story has been corrected to state that Virginia Jacober was making a right turn from the Wells Fargo parking lot onto C Street headed south, not Northern Lights Boulevard headed west.
