Anchorage police say their investigation of a 63-year-old local woman’s death last year has ended, with the circumstances surrounding the incident still uncertain despite months of investigation.
According to APD spokesperson Dani Myren, detectives closed the case of Letitia Baxter last week after they were unable to determine any evidence of foul play in her death.
Baxter was last seen Aug. 3 near the west end of the Delaney Park Strip, walking from her sister’s home on Beech Lane and headed Downtown to run some errands. Friends and family began to look for her over the weekend, holding out hope that she was still in town and eventually organizing extensive searches of areas ranging as far east as C Street.
Remains that turned out to be Baxter’s were found Sept. 24 in Earthquake Park near the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. At the time, police said the body had to be identified through dental records.
While police continued to investigate the case, by December her cause of death had been ruled inconclusive. Then-APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker said there weren’t any indications of foul play at the time, but that the investigation could proceed if any new information came in.
