The Army is preparing to ban alcohol in barracks at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson in Anchorage.
A spokesman, Lt. Col. Bill Coppernoll, tells KSKA-FM that commanders will put policies in place to address alcohol-related discipline problems.
The Air Force already bans alcohol in its barracks at the base.
Coppernoll says soldiers 21 and older will continue to be permitted to drink alcohol at a club on the Fort Richardson side of the base and off post.
Coppernoll says the Army is also considering routine checks on base for soldiers getting into trouble and courtesy patrols in Anchorage.
He also says officials are reviewing gun policies.
Coppernoll says alcohol-related disciplinary problems have increased.

What are they going to defend themselves with if they are attacked in there homes? A knife, hammer, etc...? The U.S. hasn't banned guns yet for civilians although they are used by criminals all the time, but just wait they are trying to so beware. Check out USArmy- InternmentResettlement.pfd hard read and long but interesting.
Hallelujah. Alcohol is the most dangerous drug in Alaska.
A soldier's barrack's is his home. If he drinks there, he or she is at home, not out on the highway risking the lives of others and themselves. IF that drinking becomes a problem, there are people and processes to deal with it in a military fashion. I'm a veteran; nobody liked the AP's or MP's showing up when we were having fun. The fact is some people just NEVER listen.... EVER and need official guidance in their lives. The other 90% do quite well on their own..... Kicking the drinkers out of the barracks just guarantees them being on the roads....
