A small avalanche on Mount Juneau on Tuesday morning caused no injuries or damage, with the Klondike Highway near Skagway temporarily closed by another slide.
Department of Transportation and Public Facilities spokesperson Jeremy Woodrow says crews responded to the Klondike Highway slide, reported Tuesday morning near Mile 13 of the highway. Avalanche mitigation with howitzer fire brought down another slide onto the highway, which delayed its reopening until between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
"It turned out they had to clear two avalanches before they could reopen the road," Woodrow said.
Meanwhile, avalanche forecaster Tom Mattice says the relatively small Mount Juneau avalanche did not come close to affecting the city's local urban environment.
Juneau has experienced a couple of snowstorms in the last week. Mattice says the minor slide was probably triggered by a change in wind direction Monday evening.
Woodrow says DOTPF has been monitoring the Thane area since the Juneau slide, but hasn't seen much cause for worry.
"They've been monitoring the snow pack, and it isn't a concern right now," Woodrow said.
