Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility crews have shut down water from a Friday afternoon water line break on the Old Seward Highway in Midtown, with repairs expected to continue tonight and possibly into Saturday.

AWWU spokesperson Chris Kosinski says the break occurred near Old Seward’s intersection with 50th Avenue, in the vicinity of Treeforms Amish Furniture. The road has been sanded, but he advised drivers to avoid the area while the break is being fixed.

Water on the road was slowing traffic Friday afternoon, with only one northbound lane passable near Treeforms.

Residential and business customers along Old Seward from just north of 48th Avenue to its intersection with International Airport Road won’t have water until the repairs are completed. Kosinski says water is being rerouted using fire hydrants to the Christianson’s Builders subdivision east of the break, and customers there should have water again in about two hours.

APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker says police were informed on the incident at about 3 p.m. While Old Seward is not currently closed to traffic, Parker says that may happen later Friday afternoon.
