Anchorage police say a 12-year-old boy is in critical condition after his bicycle was struck by an SUV at a Muldoon intersection Thursday afternoon.

According to APD spokesperson Marlene Lammers, Thomas Vinson was headed east on Chester Court at about 1:15 p.m., when witnesses say he rode into the path of a 2006 Jeep Commander headed north on Patterson Street driven by 24-year-old Meleanna Siulua-Butler of Anchorage.

Vinson wasn’t wearing a helmet, and was taken by medics to a local hospital.

No citations have yet been issued in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Update: On Friday morning, APD Marlene Lammers said Vinson is in stable but critical condition.

In the wake of the crash, police are reminding residents that the law requires children under the age of 16 to wear a bicycle helmet and police say wearing a helmet can save your life.
